Grand River, LP – Buildings, Structures & Stops Technician

Reports to:

Team Leader Infrastructure


Under the direct supervision of the Team Leader Infrastructure, this position carries out planned maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair on all Light Rail system infrastructure assets.

Essential Functions

  • Work on infrastructure assets as directed by the team leader or on CCF requests, in a safe manner for the public and other parties
  • Report defects and carry out fault diagnosis and appropriate rectification of defects
  • Isolate, earth, and reinstate power to, overhead line equipment and substation equipment in accordance with procedures
  • Complete accurate written and/or IT system records of work carried out
  • Undertake any training as required by Keolis
  • Assist or audit third party contractors working on the system
  • Conduct miscellaneous duties as reasonably requested by management
  • Maintains and repairs structures, facilities and grounds at LRT stops and LRT shelter locations
  • Available to assist with shelter and LRT stop snow removal and treatment
  • Oversee contractors that may be retained by the ION to perform LRT stop and LRT shelter related maintenance
  • Performs complex wiring, installation, and utilization of conduits
  • Troubleshoots and maintains systems with programmable logic and solid state controllers
  • Installs and maintains a wide range of electrical apparatus, including electrical circuits, switches, solenoids, control boards, motors, generators, yard lighting, and three-phase industrial systems
  • Troubleshoots mechanical and electrical problems using blueprints, specifications, and schematic diagrams
  • Perform repairs and adjustments to building systems including HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and finishes. Perform basic preventative building maintenance. Coordinate and monitor access for subcontractors performing maintenance or repair work.
  • Maintains lighting systems throughout the facility, cleaning fixtures and replacing bulbs and lamps
  • Monitor and control building equipment, operate facilities BAS
  • Perform routine repair and maintenance work, predictive and preventive inspections on all facility equipment
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Essential Qualifications: Recognized apprenticeship in a technical trade.
  • Preferred: Trade Certificate/License in Civil/Mechanical, Electrical/Mechanical, Automation or IT/Communications.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with use of asset management and work order systems.
  • Possess Unrestricted Driver License.
  • Preferred: Elevated Work Platform/Forklift etc.
  • Proven knowledge and experience of working in a technically based environment
  • Shift worker, with periodic shifts during nights and weekends.
  • Work at heights, work on-call regularly and work alone or in pairs according to the safety risks and procedures.
  • Mechanical and electrical design, construction, installation, and maintenance practices, procedures, methods, and equipment as found in a manufacturing or maintenance facility environment.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time 40 hour per week position. Days and hours of work are to be determined in order to meet business needs.


No travel is expected for this position.

Preferred Education and Experience

Trade Certificate/License in Civil/Mechanical, Electrical/Mechanical, Automation or IT/Communications

  • Participate in, comply with and implement the processes and systems that facilitate corrective actions, opportunities for improvement and hazard reporting.
